How are dead-fish penalties calculated?
Configurable per tournament — pounds per dead fish + how many trigger the penalty.
Dead-fish penalties are configured per tournament under "Format settings" when you create the event. Two values control the math:
- Penalty per dead fish (lb) — typical values are 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0. Most clubs use 0.25.
- Penalty kicks in at — typical values are 1 (every dead fish) or 3 (only on the 3rd+ dead fish). 1 is the most common.
Example: with penalty = 0.25 lb each, kicks in at 1: a boat that brought 5 fish to scale with 4 alive gets a 0.25 lb penalty (1 dead × 0.25). A boat with 2 dead would get 0.5 lb. The penalty is subtracted from the total bag weight on the leaderboard.
Example: with penalty = 1.0 lb each, kicks in at 3: a boat with 2 dead fish gets no penalty. A boat with 3 dead gets a 3 lb penalty (3 dead × 1.0). A boat with 4 dead gets a 4 lb penalty.
The leaderboard shows both the raw bag weight and the penalty-adjusted final weight.
